It's that great time of year again. Eight teams enter, one team cuts down the nets and earns a ticket to Rupp Arena for the Sweet 16.
With the girls' tournament kicking off at Lincoln County on Monday evening, the storylines are aplenty. Can Boyle County cap off their tremendous season with a regional title? Can Rockcastle make it back to the regional title game? How about Southwestern, looking to win their first region title since 2022. Or even Pulaski County, achieving great success under new head coach Brian Miller.
TEAM BREAKDOWN
Boyle County: The Lady Rebels enter the region tournament as the favorites at least on paper. Winning their first 45th District title in a long time this year, the Rebels have a record of 25-3 and have won their last 14 games thanks to a bruising defense that allows around just 40 points per game from opposing teams. Sophomore Addison Yates is still growing in her abilities but is already one of the top players in the region, averaging 18.6 points per game. Freshman Kynslee Leffew is a force in the paint, averaging a double-double with 11.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Key wins for the Rebels this year include Bullitt East, West Jessamine and Bethlehem, while also taking down Danville Christian three times.
Danville Christian: The Lady Warriors have won the last two regional titles but entered a new era with a new coach this season, and also had to deal with some early growing pains due to the loss of senior Grace Mbugua to the University of Louisville. Despite some early struggles, the Warriors have rebounded and enter the tournament with a record of 17-11. Danville Christian has a great one-two punch inside with junior Amauri Blackford (17 points and 10 rebounds per game) and sophomore Achan Deng (10.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game). Key wins for the Warriors include Bardstown, Lyon County and Pikeville, while they also claimed the regional All "A" title.
West Jessamine: The Colts have some unfinished business with their current group of seniors after making it to the regional title game two seasons ago and dealing with a rash of injuries and bad luck last year, as they enter the tournament with a record of 19-12. They took home the 46th District title and have a rather interesting stat of all five of their starters being 1,000 point scorers in their career. It starts with junior Claire Marshall (12.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game), but senior guards Isabella Lewis, Katie Mastin and Ariana McLoney also score in bunches. Key wins for West Jessamine include Anderson County, Danville Christian, Pulaski County and Bethlehem.
Mercer County: The Titans are much improved from last year with a record of 14-13 entering the tournament. Much of that is thanks to stellar play from junior Izzie Carlton (18.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game), but sophomore Alexa Wade (12.2 points per game) has significantly improved as well. You always have to be prepared for a Chris Souder-coached team. Key wins for the Titans included Lafayette, Anderson County and Franklin County, with Mercer also winning their sectional in the Kentucky 2A Tournament.
Rockcastle County: What a ride it has been for Rockcastle County seniors Taylor King and Macy Spivey. The Lady Rockets were on the edge of winning a region title last year, making it to the championship game. This year, despite suffering more losses than they expected, here the Rockets are ready to make a run again at 19-10 and winners of the 47th District. King was recently named the regional player of the year after averaging 19.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, with her partner Spivey averaging 16.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. When Chrysti Noble is coaching, you always have a chance no matter the matchup. Key wins for the Rockets this year include Pulaski County twice, Bell County and Franklin County.
Pulaski County: The Lady Maroons have kicked off the Brian Miller-era in spectacular fashion, going 22-8 and playing some aggressive full-court press defense in the process. What is remarkable about that record is they have played over half the season without star senior guard Madeline Butcher, who went down with a season-ending injury in December. Brooklyn Thomas has stepped up in a massive way, leading the team with 17.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Senior guard Hannah Murray does not shy away from the big moments either, averaging 10.5 points per game, while sophomore guard Caroline Heist has learned to be the starting point guard on the fly, performing admirably while growing her game all season. Key wins for the Maroons include Rockcastle County, Bowling Green, Campbellsville and Southwestern twice.
Southwestern: Here the Lady Warriors are again, winners of the 48th District with a record of 19-9. It seems like the Warriors have been locked in on the defensive end of the ball towards the final few weeks of the season. Fun fact, the last two times the Warriors have won district when it was held at McCreary, Southwestern has went on to win the regional tournament and proceeded to make deep runs into the state tournament. This is a team full of juniors but more importantly a team full of friends that don't particularly care who is the leading scorer. Jaelyn Dye is the leader of the group as the point guard, and averages 15.8 points per game. However, when you factor in the deep bench that head coach Junior Molden uses, expect to hear names like McKaila Monroe, Kenzie Williams, Kiara Scott, Semaj Artis, Kylie Dalton and Mollie Osborne a lot during the tournament. Key wins for the Warriors include West Jessamine, Franklin County, Rockcastle County and Bell County.
Wayne County: Last year's 48th District champs are back as the runners-up. The potential of this team is sky-high, but injuries have ravaged the team as both senior Adeline Heatherly and sophomore Harlow Clark are out. They don't have a completely bare team though, as juniors Abigail Heatherly (9.7 points per game) and Kelci Debord (13.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game) have helped lead the Cards to the region tournament. Key wins for the Lady Cardinals include Ballard and Breckinridge County.
BRACKET BREAKDOWN:
Game 1: West Jessamine vs Wayne County (6:30 p.m. on Monday): The Colts and the Cards played one time this season, with West Jessamine prevailing 58-45. Dating back to 2006, it is actually the Cardinals that have a 9-5 advantage over the Colts.
Game 2: Rockcastle County vs Danville Christian (8:15 p.m. on Monday): The Lady Rockets and the Lady Warriors did not play last season, but met in last year's regional title game with Danville Christian earning a 65-48 win. All-time, Rockcastle is 0-4 against the Warriors.
Game 3: Southwestern vs Mercer County (6:30 p.m. on Tuesday): These two teams squared off in the final week of the regular season, with Southwestern dominating thanks to an insane comeback with a 72-51 win. The last time the Warriors won the region championship was, fittingly enough, against the Titans. Dating back to 1999, Southwestern is 13-25 against Mercer.
Game 4: Boyle County vs Pulaski County (8:15 p.m. on Tuesday): The Lady Rebels and Lady Maroons did not play this regular season. Dating back to 1999, Pulaski is 12-11 against Boyle.
Games 5 & 6: Friday at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
Championship Game: Saturday at 7 p.m.
